The Merchant of Venice Essay Example

The Merchant of Venice Paper In the event that a man has prejudged, adverse sentiments against a gathering of individuals, as a result of race, shading, riches or some other explanation, would he be able to be viewed as uneducated in the cutting edge world or has society just taught him with intolerant perspectives? The idea of bigotry, partialities and imbalances is managed all through Shakespeares A shipper of Venice and in spite of the fact that it was composed around 1598, as a large portion of Shakespeares works the topics are all inclusive and ageless which makes them pertinent to contemporary society. The fundamental subjects of the play are equity and benevolence and how these is given and gotten in the unpleasant connection between Antonio, the Christian trader and Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. The vendor of Venice is viewed as one of Shakespeares comedies as it has an upbeat closure for the greater part of the characters and an Elizabethan crowd would discover Shylocks catastrophes entertaining, however in the last 400 years society has radically changed. Would a cutting edge crowd have an alternate assessment on the treatment of Shylock or would the Elizabethan qualities remain? Dread of the obscure is a piece of human instinct and the Jewish religion and its adherents were obscure to by far most individuals in Shakespeares time. Be that as it may, in 1290 under the rule of Edward I, 16000 Jews were ousted from England albeit a couple figured out how to remain in England by concealing their personality. This ejection prompted 350 years of Jewish outcast from England, which implies that there had been no Jews in England for around 300 years before Shakespeare was conceived! Scarcely any individuals knew a Jew and most of individuals were very straightforward, uneducated and unskilled. It was anything but difficult to order Jews and tereotype them. Something that helped in the generalizing procedure was a well known dramatization by Marlow called The Jew of Malta, acted in 1589. The lead character, Barabas will not pay tribute to the crown thus, his riches is seized and his home changed over into a religious circle. Chafed by these occasions Barabas sets out on excursion of butcher, which incorporates the harming of a whole religious circle. Elizabethan crowds adored the distortion and exaggeration of Barabass character and the finish of the story, were he is bubbled to death in a cauldron of water while shouting was particularly delighted in by the crowd! The Jew of Malta isn't only an enemy of Semitic play, however it unmistakably shows the fraud appeared by the Christian people group in Elizabethan England. One of only a handful not many Jews in England was Dr. Lopez. He was the specialist for Queen Elizabeth I. Lopez was indicted for attempting to kill Queen Elizabeth and was executed after he was tormented brutally, and during the cross examination the way that he was Jewish got known. The reasons for conviction were convictions that Lopez had attempted to harm Queen Elizabeth, however what was later found was that the facial cosmetics she utilized contained Mercury, an exceptionally harmed metallic component. Anyway the absence of logical information in Elizabethan occasions implied that Lopez was murdered. Altogether, Marlowes dramatization The Jew of Malta was performed not long after the execution, a few records guarantee it was just ten days after, so the possibility of Jews being malevolent, dangerous animals would have been exceptionally dispensed into Elizabethan generalizations. Shakespeares age put together their enemy of Semitism with respect to strict grounds. The Nazi program which peaked in the Holocaust of World War 2 and brought about the passings of 6,000,000 Jews was against Semitism on racial grounds. A Nazi couldn't care less if a Jew trusts in God or beams; A Jew is a Jew and they were viewed as racially second rate. Elizabethan England nonetheless, had acquired the Christian purposeful publicity that the Jews had killed Christ as were associated with the demon and were effectively attempting to stop the spread of Christianity. Jewish individuals don't own up to the fault for the torturous killing of Christ for different reasons: * Crucifixion was a Roman type of execution * People who lived a long time after the occasion itself and were well on the way to be one-sided against the Jews (so to assume the fault from Christianity) composed the records of the torturous killing and the occasions paving the way to the execution. Since its commencement, Christianity has attempted to stop the accompanying of different religions just as Judaism. Agnosticism and other Earth based religions had been built up many years before the introduction of Jesus yet as Christianity spread, pioneers of the Church asserted that the agnostic horned God was the fallen angel. This sort of strict publicity has remained in the public eye for quite a long time as this is were the idea of the fallen angel having horns originates from. Indeed, even Christians themselves didn't live respectively well in Elizabethan occasions, and still today as can be found in Northern Ireland; Catholics and Protestants onflict. At the point when we see these focuses, it is no big surprise that the Christian Church from the beginning of time focused on Judaism. This data is moderately obvious to how Elizabethan culture in general saw the Jews, yet what isn't so clear is the thing that precisely Shakespeares picture of a Jew was, as they had been ousted from England 300 years before his introduction to the world. This is a sincere belief, and the peruser must reach their own decision in the wake of thinking about whether Shakespeare satisfied the intolerant perspectives the crowd would have against the Jews. To do as such, the content hould be investigated as well as the sensational gadgets utilized, stage history and the historical backdrop of the Jews. The motivation behind the principal scenes is to advise the watcher regarding the fundamental plot, e. . the bond, yet Shylocks first scene lets us know of this, yet additionally we understand Shylocks character qualities. These qualities are immediately set down and rehashed his emphasis on cash, (my importance in saying he is a decent man is to have you comprehend me that he is adequate lines 13-15) his scorn of Christians, (I detest him for he is a Christian-line 38) his pride in his religion and furthermore, his shrewdness mind. Shylock really talks not exactly Bassanio or Portia and shows up in just five scenes however because of his crowd inciting character he is the most overwhelming character. Shylocks first appearance in The Merchant of Venice is in Act One Scene Three. From his passage in front of an audience the crowd would distinguish him as a Jew, as he would be wearing customary Jewish garments, for example, a coat, which is a free shroud worn by Jewish men. Shakespeare would stress the ensembles in the Globe theater and other performance center during his time, in light of the fact that the crowds were very unruly. Individuals were known to yell at the lowlifess, cheer for their saints, nd remark on the play boisterously. Simultaneously, food and drink merchants would be circumventing the crowd selling their merchandise. Unmistakable outfits made Shakespeares plots simpler to follow for the watchers. Be that as it may, as referenced previously, numerous onlookers would scoff at the reprobates and Shylocks entrance in front of an audience would get an extremely negative reaction. What adds to the crowds animosity towards Shylock is the thing that he is discussing in his presentation. He is conversing with Bassanio about loaning 3,000 ducats (type of cash) to Antonio. This imprints him as a usurer, somebody who loans cash and charges premium, hich was detested in Elizabethan occasions. This may appear to be difficult to comprehend as this is the manner by which significant banks work today, yet in the Old Testament the demanding of enthusiasm on an advance was taboo to Jews who were loaning to Jews and in the Middle Ages it was prohibited to Christian ministers and afterward to laymen. Medieval hypothesis says that cash can't raise cash and Aristotle encouraged that cash was infertile. After the ascent of free enterprise in any case, the sixteenth-century reformers loose in this educating yet a few nations toleration of usury arrived behind schedule, and England was one of those nations. The manner in which Shylock might be acting now in the play would likewise foment the crowd. Bassanio, a Christian and an old buddy of Antonio, comes to Shylock the Jewish moneylender, whom he and Antonio have savagely taunted ordinarily previously, to solicit to acquire cash for benefit from Antonio. Just because, Shylock feels as if he has the high ground. These days a great many people would absolutely have the option to comprehend why Shylock would stretch this predominance however not Shakespeares crowds. This would essentially bother them more as they would not have the option to see that a Jew is as yet a human and would have uman responses, much the same as a Christian, much the same as themselves. The fundamental plot of the play is resolved in this scene, as the relinquish of the security is chosen. On the off chance that Antonio doesn't repay the bond inside a quarter of a year, at that point Antonio must permit Shylock to cut a pound of substance from anyplace upon Antonios body. Shylock proposes the relinquish in a kidding way as he says: This benevolence will I appear. Go with me to a public accountant; seal me there Your single bond, and, in a cheerful game, If you reimburse me not on such a day let the relinquish Be selected for an equivalent pound Of your reasonable tissue, to be cut off and taken In what part of your body pleaseth me Antonio joyfully consents to the security, yet Bassanio alerts him; he doesnt need Antonio taking a chance with his life so that Bassanio can get cash, anyway Antonio consoles Bassanio that My boats get back home a month prior to the day. What he implies by this is as a vendor not exclusively will his boats get back yet his cash too. What Antonio and Bassanio don't understand however is the way that Shy

Getting Through a Difficult Month

Getting Through a Difficult Month March was the busiest month at MIT so far. It truly felt like it was never going to end. It seemed like all my midterms were clustering on the same week, and in some cases the same day, and I felt overwhelmed beyond belief. Now, as Spring Break comes to close, and the month of April has arrived, I feel ready for the next two months of school before the summer break. So, with second semester in full swing, I had about 5 midterms in March, a presentation that accounted for 30% of my grade, and what felt like the largest amount of homework in existence. My classes have split into two categories, and the amount I spend on each category is extremely different. For me, I spend the mass majority of my time on my Physics and Real Analysis class. Both of them are extremely interesting to me, but they are my most challenging to courses at the same time. Last week, I had my first analysis midterm. Coming into the class, I heard some pretty sad stories about midterm averages, so I was definitely concerned about taking the test after learning a very large bulk of the material that was all fair game to be tested on. Luckily, that week prior and weekend, I spent a large portion of my time studying and asking questions in office hours that made me go into the exam with a lot more confidence than I thought I would have. That Real Analysis exam really changed the way I viewed tests and the way I felt before exams in the preparation period. Sure, I had felt a little anxious before an exam before as just about anyone does, but for the first time, I truly was scared I was going to royally mess something up on the day of the test. I thought I was going to forget a technique, or I was going to panic and not be able to produce some counterexample that when I was studying haunted me! I really for the first time was pushing myself to spend countless hours studying for a test that truth be told, I haven’t necessarily had to do before. In the end, the month was stressful because of time. Sure, if I only had to deal with Real Analysis, which feels like 48 units of class sometimes, it would be a lot more manageable, but I have four other classes in reality. The biggest life lesson that I took out of this month is time management when things started popping out that aren’t part of your schedule. In my last few posts, I have shown my schedule and talked about managing full plates, but the office hours, independent time devoted to studying, that is really at the student’s discretion. There were a lot of time where I wanted to stop doing some of my schoolwork to watch The Office or bike, but I had to plan accordingly, so I could do as good as possible on my exams and make sure I was learning material. It is, in the big picture to me, a tradeoff. In comparison to last semester, I am learning more, I feel much more motivated, and feel like I’m improving as a person both in and out of the classroom. At the same time, I have less “free-time”, but I made up for a lot of the busy time during this extremely rewarding Spring Break. Like, right now, my family is here, and we have been all over Boston these past few days! I got to try all new restaurants, explore all new sites that were less than a mile from campus which attests to the fact that there is literally so much that can be done in terms of this city, and got to have a much-needed week off from the hustle and bustle of classes, research, and tutoring. I have a good feeling about April, and all my weekends coming up have something exciting in them! CPW is in two weeks. I can’t wait to see all the incoming students and experience the crazy weekend not as a pre-frosh this time. Well, all that in the upcoming weeks. For now, I have to play an April Fool’s Joke on someone :) Post Tagged #18.100 Real Analysis #8.02 Physics II: Electricity and Magnetism

The Thousand Days War

The Thousand Days’ War was a Civil War fought in Colombia between the years of 1899 and 1902. The basic conflict behind the war was the conflict between liberals and conservatives, so it was an ideological war as opposed to a regional one, and it divided families and was fought all over the nation. After about 100,000 Colombians had died, both sides called a halt to the fighting. Background By 1899, Colombia had a long tradition of conflict between liberals and conservatives. The fundamental issues were these: the conservatives favored a strong central government, limited voting rights and strong links between church and state. The liberals, on the other hand, favored stronger regional governments, universal voting rights and a division between church and state. The two factions had been at odds since the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1831. Attack of the Liberals In 1898, conservative Manuel Antonio Sanclemente was elected president of Colombia. The liberals were outraged, because they believed that significant election fraud had taken place. Sanclemente, who was well into his eighties, had participated in a conservative overthrow of the government in 1861 and was extremely unpopular among liberals. Because of health problems, Sanclemente’s grip on power was not very firm, and liberal generals plotted a rebellion for October 1899. War Breaks Out The liberal revolt began in Santander Province. The first clash took place when liberal forces tried to take Bucaramanga in November 1899 but were repulsed. A month later, the liberals scored their largest victory of the war when General Rafael Uribe Uribe routed a larger conservative force at the battle of Peralonso. The victory at Peralonso gave the liberals the hope and strength to drag out the conflict for two more years against superior numbers. The Battle of Palonegro Foolishly refusing to press his advantage, liberal General Vargas Santos stalled long enough for the conservatives to recover and send an army after him. They clashed in May 1900 at Palonegro, in Santander Department. The battle was brutal. It lasted approximately two weeks, which meant that by the end decomposing bodies became a factor on both sides. Oppressive heat and lack of medical care made the battleground a living hell as the two armies fought time and again over the same stretch of trenches. When the smoke cleared, there were close to 4,000 dead and the liberal army had broken. Reinforcements Up until this point, the liberals had been getting aid from neighboring Venezuela. The government of Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro had been sending men and weapons to fight on the liberal side. The devastating loss at Palonegro made him halt all support for a time, although a visit from liberal General Rafael Uribe Uribe convinced him to resume sending aid. The End of the War After the rout at Palonegro, the defeat of the liberals was only a question of time. Their armies in tatters, they would rely for the rest of the war on guerrilla tactics. They did manage to secure some victories in present-day Panama, including a small-scale naval battle that saw the gunboat Padilla sink the Chilean ship (â€Å"borrowed† by the conservatives) Lautaro in the harbor of Panama City. These small victories notwithstanding, even reinforcements from Venezuela could not save the liberal cause. After the butchery at Peralonso and Palonegro, the people of Colombia had lost any desire to continue the fighting. Two Treaties Moderate liberals had been trying to bring about a peaceful end to the war for some time. Although their cause was lost, they refused to consider an unconditional surrender: they wanted liberal representation in government as a minimum price for ending hostilities. The conservatives knew how weak the liberal position was and remained firm in their demands. The Treaty of Neerlandia, signed on October 24, 1902, was basically a cease-fire agreement that included the disarming of all liberal forces. The war was formally ended on November 21, 1902, when a second treaty was signed on the deck of the US warship Wisconsin. Results of the War The Thousand Days’ War did nothing to alleviate the long-standing differences between the Liberals and Conservatives, who would again go to war in the 1940’s in the conflict known as La Violencia. Although nominally a conservative victory, there were no real winners, only losers. The losers were the people of Colombia, as thousands of lives were lost and the country was ravaged. As an extra insult, the chaos caused by the war allowed the United States to bring about the independence of Panama, and Colombia lost this valuable territory forever. One Hundred Years of Solitude The Thousand Days’ War is well-known inside of Colombia as an important historical event, but it has been brought to international attention due to an extraordinary novel. Nobel Prize Winner Gabriel Garcà a Mà ¡rquez’ 1967 masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude covers a century in the life of a fictional Colombian family. One of the most famous characters of this novel is Colonel Aureliano Buendà a, who leaves the tiny town of Macondo to fight for years in the Thousand Days’ War (for the record, he fought for the liberals and is thought to have been loosely based on Rafael Uribe Uribe).

Causes for the American Revolution free essay sample

The British were definitely expected to win he dispute because they significantly over powered the Colonists in most areas. They had more money, weapons, people, etc. However the Americans prevailed with the help of the French. Their involvement was largely based on the French losing the French and Indian War to the English. The American Revolution was an inevitable conflict. The French and Indian War had major effects on the British and American colonists. This war doubled Englands already existent debt. Americas little financial and military help outraged many British officials during the war, which largely benefited he Americas. They were also bitter about the Colonists trading goods with enemies of the British. Because of this the British increased authority over the colonies after the war. The British began to tax the colonists to meet Englands financial needs. England passed many Acts that were ill conceived and had long-term effects on the relationship between England and the colonies. The crown had never directly taxed the colonists before. This caused problems between the Colonists and the British. A few Of the major Acts were the Sugar Act, Currency Act, Stamp Act, and Tea Act.The Sugar Act f 1 764 was an effort to try and stop the illegal trade between the Colonists and the French and Spanish. The Currency Act was also passed in 1764. The colonists responded to the Sugar Act and Currency Act by protesting against the use of writs of assistance, or search warrants, which were filled out after the illegal goods were found, violating the Colonists rights. Alleged smugglers would be tried in the Admiralty Courts where the accused had no right to trail by jury and the judge pocketed 1/3 of the fines they imposed. The Stamp Act of 1 765 enraged the colonists for this act was a direct attempt by the English o raise money from the colonists without the consent of the colonial assemblies. This tax was different from the rest because the other taxes were to regulate trade. Colonists reacted by riots, boycotts, the forming of the Stamp Act Congress, and Sam Adams organized the Sons of Liberty. The Stamp Act was the first external tax. The colonists felt that they were being taxed without representation. In 1 770 an extraordinary number of British troops were stationed in Boston. The Colonists didnt understand why there were so many troops after the war. This added to the already existent tension. The colonists taunted the Red Coats and on March 5, 1 770 the colonists threw snowballs resulting a hasty decision by the Red Coats to fire at the colonists. Five colonists were killed and nine were wounded. This night is known as the Boston Massacre. The Tea Act of 1773 was a tax on tea but, the British lowered the cost of tea significantly enough that even with the tax, British tea was cheaper than Dutch tea. Also to keep the price down, the British East India Co. To rid of the middleman in the colonies and opened up their own shops. If the colonists bought this tea, they would be accepting the fact that the British loud tax without representation. On DCE. 16th 1 773 the ships docked at the Boston ports. The Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians and threw 324 chests of tea into the water. England responded to the Boston Tea Party by the coercive Act of 1774. In the fall of 1774 the first continental congress meet in Philadelphia. 55 delegates made a list of grievances and sent it to the King because they did not want to separate from the crown but just work within the system. In the spring of 1 775 they realized that working within the system Was not going to work. For months common people were training to be prepared to fight on a minutes notice, or the minutemen. General Gage was instructed by the British to get ride of the minutemen. The minutemen were waiting at Lexington for the British soldiers because of the help from Paul River and William Dyads. No one knows who fired first but eight minutemen were killed and ten were wounded. Shots heard round the world. The British soldiers moved on to Concord. The British burnt the powder supply and continued to Boston were on the way hidden common people continually red at the Red Coats and resulted in the British losing almost three times as many people as the Americans. This is the beginning of the Revolution, which was not a war, but a rebellion. Not all of the Colonists actually supported the rebellion. A third of the people were Loyalists meaning loyal to the crown. A third of the people were neutral. A third of the people were patriots. The Colonists didnt even have a unified army. The British Empire had money, an organized army, weapons and a great naval fleet. The Colonists had none of these. The only advantage hat the Colonists had at the beginning of the rebellion was that England was across the Atlantic and the battle was in the colonies. Compared to the British who were one of the most powerful empires at this time the Colonists did not seem to have a chance. Some of the major turning points of the war was the involvement of the French and the Battle Of Yorktown. The French did not enter the war until late. The French got involved to spite the British after the French were defeated in the French and Indian war. The French brought the Colonists weapons, men, money and a naval fleet. The Americans now seemed to eave a chance. With the help of the French, Washington won the final battle at Yorktown. The French and American troops trapped Cornwallis army of more than 7,000 men between land and sea. Cornwallis excepted to find the British Fleet but instead found the French Fleet. After some resistance, Cornwallis surrendered. The final settlement in my opinion was worth all the hardships. The Colonists could govern themselves and could control their own affairs without input from England. England at most times was more concerned with the colonies solving Englands problems instead of helping the colonies solve their robbers. The historians feelings about the Revolution are broken up into four groups, the Neo-alienists, the Anti-progressions, the Neo Whig, and the New Left. The Neo-alienists believe that the British are at fault and that they should have changed some laws and things could have worked out. The Anti- Progressions see the social classes as coming together for the same causes. The Americas are a middle class society but all the classes work together for a common good. The Neo Whig feel that the conflict was between good ideas and bad ideas and the good ideas always win.The New Left looks at owe the Revolution affected the minorities and is not interested in any other parts. In my opinion, the true nature of the conflict between the British and the Colonists was that the British had loosely governed the colonies in the beginning. Because of problems at home in England they did not strictly govern the colonies. The colonies formed their own governments around the loose laws of the British. When the British needed money they decided to bring in extra revenue by taxing the colonists. The colonists did not accept their taxation without representation, which caused the Colonists to seek independence from the crown. Even though in the beginning of the Revolution the Colonists did not seem to have a chance they came back in the end with the help of the French and dedication to their cause. The French entering the war was a major turning point. The final settlement turned out to be worth all of the Colonists hardships for they could finally govern themselves freely and could make their own decisions. Historians throughout the years have had many different views about what the Revolution was really about, but half of them feel that the Colonists came together for a good cause.

To Build A Fire - Significance Of The Words Dying And Death Essays

To Build a Fire - Significance of the Words Dying and Death The significance of the words "dying and death" in Jack London's 1910 novel, "To Build a Fire" continuously expresses the man's dwindling warmth and bad luck in his journey along the Yukon trail to meet "the boys" at camp. London associates dying with the man's diminishing ability to stay warm in the frigid Alaskan climate. The main characters predicament slowly worsens one level at a time finally resulting in death. The narrator informs the reader "the man" lacks personal experience travelling in the Yukon terrain. The old-timer warned the man about the harsh realities of the Klondike. The confident main character thinks of the old-timer at Sulphur Creek as "womanish." Along the trail, "the man" falls into a hidden spring and attempts to build a fire to dry his socks and warm himself. With his wet feet quickly growing numb, he realizes he has only one chance to successfully build a fire or face the harsh realities of the Yukon at one-hundred nine degrees below freezing. Falling snow from a tree blots out the fire and the character realizes "he had just heard his own sentence of death." Jack London introduces death to the reader in this scene. The man realizes "a second fire must be built without fail." The man's mind begins to run wild with thoughts of insecurity and death when the second fire fails. He recollects the story of a man who kills a steer to stay warm and envisions himself killing his dog and crawling into the carcass to warm up so he can build a fire to save himself. London writes, "a certain fear of death, dull and oppressive, came to him." As the man slowly freezes, he realizes he is in serious trouble and can no longer make excuses for himself. Acknowledging he "would never get to the camp and would soon be stiff and dead," he tries to clear this morbid thought from his mind by running down the trail in a last ditch effort to pump blood through his extremities. The climax of the story describes "the man" picturing "his body completely frozen on the trail." He falls into the snow thinking, "he is bound to freeze anyway and freezing was not as bad as people thought. There were a lot worse ways to die." The man drowsed off into "the most comfortable and satisfying sleep he had ever known." The dog looked on creeping closer, filling his nostrils with the "scent of death." London's portrayal of the man does not initially give the reader the theme of dying, but slowly develops the theme as the story develops. The story doesn't mention death until the last several pages. The main character changes from an enthusiastic pionee r to a sad and desperate man. The conclusion of the story portrays the man accepting his fate and understands the old-timer at Sulphur Creek had been right; "no man must travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below." Typically, short stories written in the early 1900's often conclude the story with a death or tragedy. London's story is no exception. This story follows the pattern by illustrating events leading up to and including death. Thesis Statement- The significance of the words "dying and death" in Jack London's 1910 novel, "To Build a Fire" continuously expresses the man's dwindling warmth and bad luck in his journey along the Yukon trail to meet "the boys" at camp.

Adapting Theory Into Practice †Example Admission Essay

Adapting Theory Into Practice – Example Admission Essay Free Online Research Papers Adapting Theory Into Practice Example Admission Essay Education is always an vital important problem which attracts more attention from each country. I thought to enter a university in China before, but after my throughtfully investigation, I choose this university which is far from my hometown. The Chinese fundamental education system pays more attention to the theory learning. Teachers always emphasize the concepts existed in the books, and put it in the second place that how to cultivate the ability of adapting theory into practice, which make us more familiar with the theory, but low ability in the practice. In order to let more and more students have the chances to receive higher education, many universities carried out an â€Å"Enlargement of Recruitment Policy†(guided by National government) in 1999, but the negative influence greatly increased owing to enlargement of recruitment on all levels and scales. As students who will enter university for further study, we are all worried about it. Teachers, especially professors, are extremely lacked. The classes, which should be on small scale are enlarged into big ones (with eighty to one hundred students). In the labs, several students sharing one equipment can be seen everywhere. The above scenes all intangibly make a great influence on students. As a student, who will receive higher education, what kinds of university I will choose have much relation with my future employment. Therefore, even though the tuition fees for Chinese universities are less than that in America, I don’t want to make any mistakes on my future, which means to receive such rough education. As we all know, there is a sound education system in U.S. Many universities in U.S. are famous in the world owing to their academic achievements. There are advanced teaching facilities, too. I firmly believe that I will receive better qualitative education on in your country. Case Study - Recruiting Manager Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Case Study - Recruiting Manager - Essay Example With this radar technology, establishing a new subsidiary in Israel would be a big boost for Israel during its conflicts with the Arab states. Question one Following the new idea of establishing a new subsidiary in Israel, the CEO, Paul Lizfeld directed John Corners, the vice president of human resource in the United States and Francis O’Leary the vice president of human resource in the UK to find the best candidate for the new subsidiary in Israel (Roof and Bakhtari 136). Given the fact that the new subsidiary in Israel need to thrive just like in other areas, it poses a great challenge for both Corners and O’Leary to come up with a candidate who will oversee development and growth of the new subsidiary in Israel. Additionally, it would also be important for the two vice presidents to take in to account qualities that would fit the general manager’s ability to work in Israel. The major challenge for the two vice presidents will be finding the correct person for the job (Roof and Bakhtari 136). In order to facilitate business operations in Israel, the general manager should have Hebrew language knowledge. Given the fact that the general manager in Israel will be the representative of the BRB, it would be important to select a candidate who is culturally sensitive & diplomatic. It would also be a challenge to get a candidate who will be comfortable working in a country full of unrests. In this regard, it would be vital to select a candidate with a strong sense of politics. This will be of importance because the manager will be in a position to balance both politics and business. Moreover, somebody with a sense of politics will be in a position to conduct sensitive transactions with the Israel government (Roof and Bakhtari 137). The other challenge is that the vice presidents have to put in mind the standards of the general manager for the new subsidiary because he or she will be accountable for all transactions on behave of BRB. In other wor ds, having an incompetent general manager poses a great risk of the vice presidents loosing their jobs (Roof and Bakhtari 138). They are directly answerable to the CEO. It is also a challenge to the two vice presidents to come up with the right general manager given that they are supposed to conduct the search for the best candidate separately. Each would have his own criteria of choosing the candidate and it would be challenging to decide whose candidate is the best. However, the underlying principle is to come up with a candidate who would be in a position to manage and control BRB’s operations in Israel. Question two Of all the criteria the two vice presidents have to use in selecting the right person to head operations in the new subsidiary in Israel, they have to ensure that their criterion is in line with Lizfeld’s strong micromanagement style which emphasized on cost control (Roof and Bakhtari 136). According to Conners recruitment criteria, the general manager must work with Israel government both in direct capacity and in direct capacity (Roof and Bakhtari 137). According to him, the general manager must be in a position to conduct sensitive transactions with the Israel government. Due to the ongoing unrests in Israel, Conners decided to recruit somebody with extraordinary patience. He also thought of having a candidate with technical skills, a strong sense of politics, organizational ability, and cultural empathy (Roof and Bakhtar

The impact of information technology on supply chain capabilities and Literature review

The impact of information technology on supply chain capabilities and firm performance for construction companies - Literature review Example Risks in construction projects are some of the major challenges to supply chains in the industry for delivery of value that can meet customers’ expectations. Supply chains have different risks and while little literature exists on their effects and possible solutions in the construction industry, Gosling, Naim, and Towil (2013) suggest the role of information technology in understanding the scope of the uncertainty in construction supply chains and possible solutions. According to the authors, an empirical approach that involves data collection and analysis can help in identification of the risks and roles of information technology in statistical methods is instrumental (Gosling, Naim, and Towil 2013). Consequently, implementation of information technology in construction supply chains could help in predicting and managing challenges for effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery. In addition, information technology, through use of Automated Materials Locating and Tracin g Technology, helps construction companies to overcome uncertainty challenges that arise from visibility problems (Young et al. 2013, p. 7, 8). Meng, Sun and Jones’ proposed model for managing supply chain relationships in the construction industry further supports the role of information technology in constructions’ supply chains (2011). The authors’ Maturity Model empowers construction companies to effective management that is associated with better performance, greater opportunities, and minimal conflicts. Implementing the model for these benefits however requires complex data analysis that identifies the need for information technology. The construction industry also identifies need for collaboration among stakeholders, especially between contractors and sub-contractors, for successful projects and application of such technologies as the Construction Collaborative

Methods of Research: Philosophy of research There are many different types of research philosophies used by researchers like positivism, realism, interpretive, objectivism, subjectivism, pragmatism, functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist and radical structuralism. There are two types of realism direct and critical and the meaning of direct is what you see is what you get. Critical realism is the real world images of things and theory suggests data which specify technique at back observables. It means before data collection selection the selection of theory is must and then collection of data according to requirement (Saunders et al, 2007). Types of Research There are two main type of research approaches qualitative and quantitative research. Quantitative research, by definition deals with quantity and relationships between attributes; it involves the collection and analysis of highly structured data in the positivist tradition (Bowling 1997) .This method of research is appropriate in situations in which there is pre-existing knowledge which will permit the use of standardized data collection methods like survey, questionnaires.(Bowling 1997). Qualitative is an empirical research in which data is in text form rather than in number form. Qualitative method as opposed to quantitative used to collect and analyze the information in as many shapes, mostly non numeric. Main focus of this technique is to explore as feasible in detail, idea is to attain deepness instead of breadth (Blaxter ET at, 2007). I will use qualitative method of research here. The strength of this approach is the capability to study people in the field. Qualitative research describes words rather than numbers, the equality of social phenomena through observation. I am using in depth interviews and questionnaire and discussion group at the same time for collecting my research data. Methodology The methodology shall be illustrative qualitative using a case study methodology. This method offers an opportunity to study a particular subject and this can be used to express theories. Case study is a strategy for doing research method which involves an empirical investigation of a specific occurrence within its real life context using multiple source of indication.

Dead Man Walking Essays -- essays research papers

DEAD MAN WALKING   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Dead Man Walking is a great book that deals with one of our nations most controversial issues: capital punishment. The books narrator, Sister Helen Prejean, discusses her personal views on capital punishment. She was a spiritual advisor and friend to two death row inmates; Elmo Patrick Sonnier and Robert Lee Willie. From her experiences, she developed views on the death penalty. She believed it was morally wrong and spoke openly about it. Sister Helen successfully defends her views on capital punishment while stating that capital punishment should be illegal. Her experiences have taught her that although these criminals were dangerous and deadly, and that their crimes were inexcusable, a death sentence should not be the answer.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I believe Sister Helen’s success in dealing with the issue of capital punishment falls on the two cases for which she was a spiritual advisor. In these cases, Sister Helen always tried her best to grant stays of execution or a court appeal. She fought for what she believed in and tried her best to abolish the death penalty. Sister in no way condemned what these killers had done, but tried her best to comfort them in their time of loneliness, sorrow, and need.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sister Helen’s first case, Patrick Sonnier, better influenced my opinion on capital punishment. Her strategies in dealing with a convicted killer were brave and courageous. She was always willing to meet with Patrick and to talk about anything he liked. She helped him to realize his mistake, but more importantly, helped him to become a better person. She was always reminding Pat that God had the power of forgiveness, and that if he were truly sorry, God would forgive him. Sister Helen’s best arguments were the details she spoke about prior to Sonnier’s death. When Sister Helen spoke about Pat’s legal defense, it made a big impact on me as a reader. She persuaded me to look at things from two angles, instead of just one. As a reader, I was upset with the comparison between Pat’s sentence and his brother’s sentence. How could two brothers who conspired in the murder together receive two different sentences: Pat receiving a death s entence, while Pat’s brother Eddie receiving a lesser charge in a ... ...sing something. Sister was missing the dreadful feeling of a loved one brutally murdered at the hands of a killer. Who is to say that people can not change their minds about capital punishment? As of now, I am opposed to the death penalty. If someone killed a person I loved or cared about deeply, and they faced a death sentence, I would really have to consider my views again. This just shows that you should never be truly positive on your views about capital punishment until you have had the opportunity of experiencing a loss by the hands of a killer.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I believe Sister Helen was extremely successful in describing her oppositions towards capital punishment. Her experiences as a spiritual advisor to two death row inmates gave her knowledge about capital punishment that was previously just foundation in her beliefs. Dead Man Walking Essays -- essays research papers DEAD MAN WALKING   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Dead Man Walking is a great book that deals with one of our nations most controversial issues: capital punishment. Her methods of dealing with the arguments of capital punishment were honest and fair. She presented herself in a way that made you listen to everything she had to say about the death penalty. Her evidence and facts were thoroughly supported throughout the book. She also allowed the reader to decide on his or her own view of capital punishment.
